Imagine being in medical distress, but fearing to seek help from your own doctors due to Missouri’s abortion laws.
This is the terrifying reality I’m facing after traveling out of state for care.
When I sought emergency room treatment for severe symptoms, I had to withhold information about my abortion to protect myself legally. This lack of honesty with my providers could have put my health at even greater risk.
The doctor-patient relationship is built on trust. But how can we be open about our medical histories and symptoms if we fear criminalization?
Delaying care due to legal fear can have dangerous consequences.
Our laws must ensure that patients can seek necessary treatment without intimidation.
It’s time to rethink legislation that threatens the very foundation of ethical medical practice.
